LG Electronics has announced the world’s thinnest LCD panel that is just about 2.6mm thick. The panel measures 42 inches and has a Full HD resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels. This “Extreme Slim” LCD panel is only half as thick as LG’s previous 5.9mm prototype. LG has achieved this feat by the use of an edge-lit LCD backlight system and optical film technology.
According to LG, the “Extreme Slim” LCD panel weighs just 4kg, has a 120Hz refresh rate and will produce clear, sharp images. CEO Chung In-jae in a statement said that by introducing a panel so thin, LG Display has yet again “demonstrated its technical prowess in satisfying customer demand for high resolution and slim design”. LG will reportedly display this ultra slim panel at the International Consumer Electronics Show in January next year. Samsung previously held the title for the ‘world’s thinnest LCD panel’ with its Needle Slim which measures just 3.mm thick.
