A report titled ‘Get up and Grow’ by a team from the University of Melbourne says that children should not be allowed to watch TV till they turn two because too much of television can supposedly hinder their language development and also affect their concentration. According to reports from The Australian, the government recommendations feel that children of the two to five age group should not watch more than an hour of television per day.
Intended to aid in checking the growing number of children suffering from obesity, these Australian guidelines also offer advice for parents. Not just TV, the guidelines also suggest that children below two years of age should not spend time with other electronic media like computer, video games and DVDs as well. The Australian Government has not finalised the report and says that they are being finalised.
A draft copy of the report from The Australian states more time spent in front of television, could cut down ‘the amount of time they have for active play, social contact with others and chances for language development.’
