TV licensing authorities revealed that over 80,000 TV license dodgers were were caught in Scotland last year with over 23,000 offenders from Glasgow alone. According to new figures released today, Glasgow has the maximum number of offenders, followed by Edinburgh, Aberdeen and Dundee. TV license cheaters seem to be thriving shamelessly, with figures suggesting that last year there were 2,000 more than 2008.
TV Licensing officer Fergus Reid said that they worked hard to nab those who attempted to cheat the system and that the latest figures showed that “there really is no hiding place for evaders”. Over 417,000 TV viewers were caught without a license last year with the prospect of facing a fine of up to £1,000. Officials supposedly use an extensive database of about 30 million addresses to identify non TV license payers. About 95% of UK households did pay the £142.50 license fee, they said.
