In what can be an absolutely shocking revelation, over 4,000 prisoners in five contractor-run prisons are let to watch satellite TV in their cells. Robbers and crooks are watching their favourite shows from the comfort of their cells. Prisoners are given this perk for ‘good behaviour’ and one in twenty of them enjoy Sky TV from their bed, according to The Daily Mail. These figures have been revealed by MP Philip Davies who felt that it was ‘galling’ for his constituents ‘to be paying for prisoners’ to watch Sky TV in their cells through their taxes, when they themselves cannot afford it.
He also added that this has nothing to do with rehabilitation and was a ‘prime example’ that showed that the conditions of our prisons are ‘far too cushy.’ The five jails that offer this TV perk to the inmates house prisoners of the second highest classification, category B. According to Justice Minister Maria Eagle, HM prisons Dovegate and Lowdham Grange operated by the Serco group, Altcourse, Parc and Rye Hill operated by the G4S security services provider provided access to a ‘limited number’ of satellite TV channels.
