If you’re looking to replace the rectangular box in the living room that was once called television, and are looking for something that could introduce you to the real world of entertainment, the Samsung LE37B652 37” LCD TV could be a good option. We’re not implying that this 37 incher is the most perfect TV there is, but you know, the fact that it’s from Samsung, the fact that it looks good enough for you to earn a good lot of jealous neighbours, the fact that it sports a decent set of features all go to show that this TV is well worth a consideration. The LE37B652 is a Platinum Black crystal TV, by crystal Samsung indicates the crystal neck and the glassy covering over the display, which pretty much win the show.
The Samsung LE37B652 Full HD LCD TV is DLNA certified, which means you can enjoy music, photos or videos from your compliant PC wirelessly. The dynamic contrast ratio is simply quoted as “Ultra Contrast” and the TV also houses a Picture-in-Picture tuner. Pictures, it is needless to say are sharp and appealing. But black levels can be a wee bit lacking and the brighter shades look rather over-effective. Colours are natural and skin-tones seem realistic and well-handled.
Samsung rarely disappoints when it comes to connectivity and it’s true this time around too: The LE37B652 is generously embellished with 4 HDMIs apart from a D-sub port, a USB 2.0 Movie connection and an RF input among others. Featuring 100Hz Motion Plus, this LCD TV handles motion with élan, there is no sign of 24p judder, what so ever. Audio form the down firing speakers is not all that great, Samsung always seems to struggle when it comes to audio. The Samsung LE37B652 LCD TV though not perfect, is rock-steady.
LG 37LH3000 LCD TV

When have we ever complained about LG’s LCD TVs? Never are they over-priced like Sony’s and never do they lack in anything major. But we have come across some from the Korean electronics giant which we somehow didn’t have the heart to label ‘perfect’. But the TV is today’s spotlight, the LG 37LH3000 37” LCD TV comes really close to be called so. It’s not all that cheap like some of LG’s previous models, but has quite a lot to speak for the high price. The design is of finesse and elegance, though there’s nothing new apart from the usual glossy black finish; but again, we shouldn’t be complaining much, it’s pretty enough. There’s a silvery tinge at the bottom edge, giving the TV a whole new appeal.
The LG 37LH3000 HD-Ready LCD TV has a high contrast ratio of 50,000:1, which is visibly translated on screen. Pictures are a treat for the eyes, every subtlest move and subtlest shade is captured with brilliance. The TV has a 1920 x 1080 pixel resolution and quotes a brightness level of 500cd/m2. Freeview quality is amazing, there are minimal blurs and audio from the invisible speakers is acceptable, if not all that perfect. (Audio seems to be a major problem area for today’s LCD TVs!) Blu-Ray and DVD movies are faithfully rendered – there’s hardly anything to complain about them at all.
Quick movements of agile screen characters in the screens of this TV are smooth and effortless – so this makes gaming with this telly a sheer pleasure. There are just 3 HDMIs, though – this number is not less, but we can’t help but complain when the rival brands have managed to give 4. The 37LH3000 is recommended by the Energy Saving Trust – which goes to say that it’s proved to be efficient. According to LG, their LCD TVs can save up to 20% of power. The LG 37LH3000 comes really close to be pronounced perfect, but again, we refrain from doing so. (Boy are we mean!)
LG 37SL8000 LCD TV

Known for their perfect marriage of technology and style, LCD TVs from LG have never disappointed us. Be it the colourful affair of Finding Nemo or the darkest of dark tales of The Dark Knight, the LG 37SL8000 37″ LCD TV shines in all its glory. The TV has a 1920 x 1080 pixel resolution and is HD-Ready, so HD sources are delivered with such clarity and detail that do wonders to the whole entertainment experience. Firstly, the attribute that any viewer will look for in any TV will be the video quality; and our LG telly does extremely well in that front.
The LG 37SL8000 HD Ready LCD TV fares well in the audio front too, it must be added that certain voices sound a little scratchy on careful observation. But an average viewer wouldn’t be able to figure that out all that easily. The ‘Frameless design’ is an eye-catcher nevertheless, and the 37SL8000 does look like a piece of art. The neck looks elegant, with an air of finesse. TruMotion 200Hz is one of its highlights, ’superior natural picture’ is what LG claims this feature to be able to achieve and it’s true. Spidey’s every move as he swings across the concrete jungle is captured with astonishing detail. That’s when you realise that this TV is perfect for action movies and sport.
Connectivity is a decent affair, with 4 HDMIs and a USB 2.0 slot talking in its favour. Bluetooth is an interesting addition, for it lets you transfer the content from your mobile phone into your TV and also enjoy your favourite shows cocooned in your own world with the help of a Bluetooth wireless headset. This ultra-slim TV is Eco friendly too, for it’s recommended by the Energy Savings Trust. A one of kind TV I should say, with above average performance for an affordable price.
Sony KDL-37W5500 LCD TV

Let’s face it: Sony might never tire out of the same old glossy black finish. You guessed it, the Sony KDL-37W5500 37” LCD TV has the clichéd glossy black finish that we’re so bored of. The transparent strip at the bottom edge of the screen is present, though, saving you from the boredom. Oh well, there are some things in life that you just accept with a sigh. But let me tell you, the design of this TV is neither gaudy nor ugly, some might even call it classy, its just plain boring to me. (Am I mean today or what!! God help this TV!) Right then, charging straight into the performance, I must say the KDL-37W5500 defeated my mean stint.
Yes, this Full HD LCD TV does not lack visibly enough anywhere. As a matter of fact, Sony’s ‘greyish tone’ trouble that seemed to haunt it was no where to be seen in the KDL-37W5500. Bravo, it is. ‘Experience picture so fluid and life-like’ says Sony. And fluid and life-like it is. Isn’t the presence of Motionflow 100Hz technology enough to assure this? But then it makes one wonder if the exclusion of this processing technology would have had any visible impact in motion handling. Weird. Sony’s BRAVIA ENGINE adds more life to colours, giving the overall picture a facelift.
Blu-Ray movies are rendered to perfection, that too with the inclusion of the 24p True Cinema feature. The connectivity sector of the KDL-37W5500 is headed by 4 HDMIs, a USB 2.0 Input and AppliCast using which we can view content from the internet in the 37” TV screen. This 37 incher costs around £750, which is alarming, because a Samsung LCD TV of the same size could cost you just £400.
