Three UK Television Journalists Apprehended by Sri Lanka
Three television journalists of Channel-4 television news were arrested by the Sri Lankan police alleging them of tarnishing the image of the security forces of the government. The Channel-4 television news company is a London-based firm. Latest reports reveal that they have been deported.
The media-men arrested by the Lankan authority were; the Asian correspondent of the channel-4, Nick Paton Walsh, cameraman Matt Jasper and producer Bessie Du. The news of the arrest had been informed by Walsh himself to the Associate Press through a telephone call. Walsh said that the three journalists had been covering the fierce battle going on between the Sri Lankan army and the separatist LTTE activists.
Later, Ranjith Gunasekhara, the spokesman for the Sri Lankan poilice confirmed the arrest of the trio on Saturday from the eastern city of Trincomalee. He added that investigations were going on, on the incident. Walsh believes that the arrests might be linked to a recent report filed by the crew on the alleged sexual abuse in the concentration camps, apart from the unhealthy condition of apprehended war refugees.
The arrests of the Channel-4 television journalists came amidst rising international concern for an estimated number of fifty thousand civilians stuck amidst the fighting. It is also reported that heavy fighting is going on resulting in as much civilian casulalities in a sliver of land that is just about 4 square km, on the north-eastern coast of Sri Lanka.
