Television responsible for speech problems in toddlers: Survey
A recent survey revealed that 22% of boys and 13% of girls in the UK suffer from underdeveloped speech and problems with understanding what others say because of incessantly running TVs. According to The Daily Mail, British communications adviser Jean Gross conducted the study that showed that one in seven girls and one in four boys experienced speech disabilities. Mrs Gross found that 3% of children suffered ‘significant’ problems and that one in ten toddlers of the one to two age group had a TV set in their rooms while one in every three seven-year-olds had their own TV sets.
She further found that the problem did not concern children from affluent families alone, but those from the middle-class families as well. Her study was conducted by YouGov, and showed that over a quarter families had their TV sets switched on ‘all the time’ or ‘most of the time.’ She said that our brains have not evolved to learn from machines, adding that “Babies are primed to respond to faces and to recognize their parents.”
