The Korean electronics giant launched the sales of 3D TVs in South Korea on Thursday and is the first one to do so. Reuters reports that Samsung has set itself an “aggressive target” of 2 million 3D TVs this year. Samsung is planning to “create the market with aggressive marketing”, according to the company’s senior vice president of visual display sales, Kim Yang-kyu.

Samsung has reportedly launched sales of three 3D TV series that come with LCD displays with LED backlights. Global sales of Samsung’s 3D TVs are set to happen next month with March 9 set as the official date of release in the United States. The 3D TVs launched measured less than 3cm in thickness and with 3D function that can be switched on and off. The 46” model comes for 4.2 million won while the 55” version costs 5.8 million – and that’s excluding the cost of the special glasses.

According to Reuters, Samsung has signed a 3D content contract with DreamWorks Pictures and is also engaged in talks with other big studios, game developers and broadcasters. LG Electronics has announced to launch their versions of 3D TVs during the second half of this year, while Sony is set to launch them this summer.

Samsung Electronics has launched its first ever commercially available 3D equipped LED TVs in the Korean market today.
