Samsung comes up with world’s thinnest LCD Panel dubbed ‘Needle Slim’
In what could be yet another breakthrough, Samsung Electronics has announced the world’s slimmest LCD panel that is just about 3.9 millimeters wide. The 40″ panel has been nicknamed ‘Needle Slim‘ since its width is of that of two coins. The panels uses LED lights set along the edges for backlighting and can be employed for manufacturing ultra slim LED TVs. Jang Tae-seok, the managing director of the LCD TV sector at Samsung says that with this ‘technical breakthrough in the width of an LCD panel’, they will maintain their leadership in the ultra slim TV panel sector and the ‘IT device market’.
Needle Slim is a 100Hz panel that is HD ready. It will have a contrast ratio of 5,000 : 1 and a full HD resolution. Other than this, we have no information regarding the specifications of this ultra slim LED panel. It appears that Samsung will unveil this LED panel at FPD International 2009 on October 28th in Yokohama. There is no word on the pricing, though it’s obvious it will cost a bundle.
