LG speaks of 3D TV plans
From the looks of it, LG Electronics appears to have immersed itself completely in the 3D wave that has hit the industry lately. The world’s second-largest television manufacturer announced yesterday that it aims at selling about 400,000 units of 3D TVs by the end of 2010 and about 3.4 million of them in 2011. In a bid to equip itself better, LG has reportedly signed a memorandum of understanding with SkyLife, the satellite broadcasting provider of South Korea to join forces on a 3D platform.
Paik Woo-hyun, the chief technology officer at LG indicated that with this deal, LG intends to enter the 3D TV race that is on among other top manufacturers. He also said that they also plan to launch “various 3-D items, including PDPs and projectors”. LG has already launched a 47” 3D TV with an LCD panel in August this year and according to The JoongAng Daily, it will launch a range of 3D products, including a 72” 3D TV and a 150” 3D projector.
3D appeared to dominate this year’s CEATEC expo, with manufacturers like Sony putting up banners like ‘Sony is bringing 3-D in reach of families in 2010′ in their booth. Samsung and Hitachi have also showed interest in 3D by launching prototypes.
