Disasters Emergency Committee launches massive TV appeal

October 7, 2009

tv-appeal-lcdtvreviews.org.ukThe Disasters Emergency Committee has launched a massive TV appeal to help the victims of the catastrophic earthquake and typhoons that hit south-east Asia. A massive earthquake of magnitude 7.9. struck Indonesia’s southern coast of Sumatra on September 30th killing over 1300 people and displacing thousands. Figures from  Indonesia’s National Disaster Management Agency suggest that about  83,712 houses, 285 schools, 200 public buildings, five bridges, 20 miles of road and 100,000 other buildings were destroyed.

British rescue teams from the regions say that work is ‘moving towards relief’. According to the BBC, hundreds of volunteers are involved in search and rescue operations in Indonesia.  Brendan Gormley, the chief executive of the DEC said that the nature of these disasters recalled the  2004 tsunami horrors. “Millions have seen the world they know ripped apart around them,” said he. The chief executive also added that though DEC member agencies were responding already, the public’s help was urgently needed to fund their relief work.

Typhoons in Philippines and Vietnam have affected scores of people, hundreds of thousands have lost their livelihood. The DEC is involved in rescue operations in those regions as well. The committee is also asking for donations for the  typhoons victims. Those willing to donate can call  0370 60 60 900 or visit www.dec.org.uk.
