Television Technologies of The Present and Future

July 10, 2009

tobias in lonely woods Television Technologies of The Present and FutureThe day is placid and the sky is murky. I sit alone, reading a dull book – I don’t know why I’m reading the wretched thing. But I can’t just sit here doing nothing, can I? But eventually, I become aware of the thickness of the quietude around me, that I can concentrate no more on anything, leave alone the book. Looking around, I decide to explore the place. Hopping from the bench, my feet crush dry leaves that makes a raw sound, disturbing the silence of the place. But as I walk ahead, the sound becomes one with the place, an instant marriage. I cross tiny streams, decayed foliage, strange fruit-bearing trees, birds I’ve never seen before, might be from a foreign land, seductively red toadstool and tall trees that reached mysterious heights. I stopped when a thought struck me, or better, a smell struck me. The smell of wood burning? Fire? Or worse, death? I hurried on my steps, curiosity giving wings to my legs. I went closer, closer and closer. I was so close that I could almost touch it. Then it came to me like a tide – the smell of burnt toast. Wait a minute! TOAST?

kids Television Technologies of The Present and FutureSo, how was my narration,eh? Real enough? This is the dream that I had last night, or more precisely, last dawn. I put the bread in the toaster and fell asleep at the kitchen table. So you get the picture. My toast got burnt beyond recognition. Okay, now for something serious. Well, I have something to tell you about television technologies of the future. Let’s begin shall we? As a teenager, I remember televisions to be bulky boxes that emitted sound and light. Look at my wall-mounted LED TV at home, I would have never thought that televisions would be as slim as picture frames one day.

Televisions have evolved from fat, black cubes to flexible pound coin thin ones. How fast they have changed and how drastic the change has been! To begin with television technologies of the future, OLED TVs are first to come to my mind. They have already been elaborated on, and like I said, ultra-slim TVs with high contrast ratios and low power consumption will be dominate over all others in the future, so I expect OLED TVs to do that.

tobias talking Television Technologies of The Present and FutureIt is estimated that between 2008 and 2012, the UK will be completely digital. In digital televisions, the signals are sent via cables, satellites or telephone lines. To explain this in simple terms, in digital TV, the information is transmitted in the form of 0s and 1s while in the analogue format, the signal is sent in the form of waves. So the advantage of digital TV is obvious, more information can be sent and they are clearer when compared to analogue. You get additional advantages like interactive features and electronic programme guides too. To be able to watch digital TV, all you will need is a set-up box or a receiver.

HDTV is one good package that has everything that you would expect – clear and sharp pictures as well as audio. In order for a television to be ‘HD ready’ i.e; to receive HD signals, it must have a minimum display resolution of 1920×1080 and should be able to display 1080p and 1080i video without any overscan. HDTV should be watched to be believed, trust me, you might actually wonder if more clear images are ever possible. Some examples of HD ready televisions are: LG LHX,  Samsung LE46A856S1M and Samsung LE46A756.

So how would it be if you can connect you TV to your PC? Wow, that opens doors to possibilities sky-high. You can watch videos direct from the internet and what not! PVR – Personal video recorder is yet another interesting technology. This technology lets you watch live television at your own pace, you can rewind them and watch all your favourite action, again and again. Their working is simple: they record your choice of programmes in the digital format in hard-drives. PVRs have a software backing them and hence they can record a series of programmes of their own accord, once they are set to do so.

What else? There are so many of them, so many exciting television technologies that come to my mind now, that I do not know what to focus on. Oh, yes. Then there is the possibility of watching TV in your mobile phone. And did I mention DTRs? Bored of watching pointless commercials during those nerve-wracking moments when the Harry pulls open Spidey’s mask? Digital Television Recorders let you control what you want to watch.

Now, with new technologies evolving every minute, I wouldn’t be surprised if one day, televisions sprout limbs and start strutting towards us when we get home screaming “Match alert! Match alert! Finals today. England vs. Australia!”
