Television turns lifesaver in Haiti

January 21, 2010

Rescuer with one-month old babyHaiti‘ – The very word conjures not just images of death and disaster, but of life, of love unassailable by mere physical death, of heroism displayed by people who were days before mere passers-by. For the survivors of the catastrophic earthquake, it’s all about moving on and learning to do that with determination and strength. The task is not an easy one, but not an impossible one as well. Indeed, when the Haitians realise that they are not alone – that they have a whole Earth load of brothers and sisters for them, starting a new life can be a whole new experience of togetherness, love and purpose.

Rescue effortsWhile supports and relief measures are pouring in to Haiti form across the globe, the entertainment industry is also set to do it’s best to help its fellow siblings. Telethon ‘Hope For Haiti’ has been organised by “Messenger of Peace” George Clooney which will be broadcast across the world on January 22 in order to collect funds for the earthquake victims. Celebrities like Christina Aguilera, Justin Timberlake and Bono will feature in the two hour television show which will be broadcast in the UK on MTV UK on January 23 at 1 am.

Hope For Haiti was hosted by George Clooney in Los Angeles, CNN news show anchor Anderson Cooper in Haiti and Haitian-American multi-platinum musician  Wyclef Jean in New York. The telethon will also be broadcast on CNN, BET, ABC, Fox, HBO, VH1, CMT, The CW and NBC commercial-free on January 22 between 6.pm and 8.pm. and is urging viewers to donate to Yele Haiti Foundation, UNICEF, Red Cross, Oxfam America and Partners in Health.

HaitiTelevision reporters and camera-men in Haiti have been amazing the past few days, where many shed their roles as reporters & journalists and turned rescuers and lifesavers. CNN’s Dr. Sanjay Gupta was even seen to be performing brain surgery on a little girl while ABC News’ Dr. Richard Besser assisted in the delivery of a baby in the blood-stained grounds of Haiti.

As cameras zoomed into the deep corners of rubble and journalists ran hither and thither, a skinny dog was seen limping by itself, his left year missing. But before we could make a move towards it, a Haitian scooped it by his arms and hugged it tight, displaying what the brutal earthquake failed to destroy – love.
