Calling all earthlings….calling all earthlings
Those of you who are dreaming of befriending an adorable E.T that has black-beetle eyes and E.S.P, keep dreaming. Soon, it may become as impossible as the sun sprouting horns. Not that prospects are all that excellent, but still. We had our hopes. Scientists who were keeping their ears at the ready for alien contact from outer space now say that the earth is becoming more and more untraceable. And just as it was for global warming and climatic change, we have no one to blame but us.
US astronomer Frank Drake has warned that human beings are making it difficult for possible alien civilisations to trace us. The expert who has been attempting to seek alien contact for 50 years spoke to journalists at a meeting on the search for extraterrestrial intelligence. This is based on the belief by astronomers that in case aliens attempt to contact earth, they will do so by seeking TV and radio signals. Since broadcasting techniques of the recent times have improved to a great extent, our signals are getting fainter by the day.
In the past, signals were transmitted from ground stations at thousands of watts and were much easier for aliens to eaves-drop. Now that we use satellites with aerials pointing towards the earth for broadcasting LCD TV and radio signals, the wattage has decreased considerably, making our presence less traceable. Also, since the digital-switchover is happening at a fast pace, chances of alien contact are even lesser as our signals will become four times fainter, say scientists. “Very soon we will become undetectable” said Dr Drake.
Astronomers believe that seeking broadcast signals could be the best way to identify extraterrestrial life and scientists have been doing so for many years, but to no avail. Most scientists at the meeting were sure that life existed in other planets and that there could be many planets like our earth hidden in the infinite realms of space. Royal Society president Lord Rees said that he suspected the existence of life and intelligence in other planets in forms that we human beings cannot conceive, ‘forms of intelligence beyond human capacity.’
