360-Degree 3D display gives Sony a head start in the 3D race
The 3D TV race is on. Manufacturers like Samsung, LG, Hitachi, Panasonic and Toshiba are gearing up with their prototypes for the biggest, most awaitedrace that could hit the TV world in the near future – the race for the best 3D TV in the market. Smoke has already started to arise and it is Sony that is a step ahead of others with its latest innovation, a 360-Degree 3D display. Before you start raising eyebrows, I must tell you that this is no speculation, Sony has planned to unveil this unbelievable display today at the Tokyo’s Digital Content EXP0 2009.
On first sight, you might mistake this queer-looking object for a funky table lamp or even a lopsided hair dryer. But the thing is actually a 3D display. This best LCD measures about 13 x 27 cm and has a display resolution of 96 × 128 pixels and is capable of displaying a 24-bit colour image. The display is stereoscopic, which means it does not require any special glasses for viewing it.
Sony is apparently looking at using this prototype in 3D photo frames, outdoor displays, in digital signage, medical imaging, telephone displays, home theaters and also TVs. Sony’s idea is rather unique, for it gives the user a 360 degree 3D viewing experience without the need for the special 3D glasses. There is no news on when Sony plans to commercialize this prototype or the cost. And it doesn’t take a wizard to guess that it will cost a bomb!
