LCD TV Buying Guide

Eyeing that oh-so-glossy LCD TV displayed in the store across your office? Is the darn thing pulling you with invisible strings, threatening your savings for the year-end vacation? Then by all means indulge, but not before you make sure that the TV will suit your needs. Here is a checklist that will help you choose the right LCD TV:
  • Go for TVs that sport the “HD-Ready Logo”. This indicates that the TV is capable of receiving and displaying HD transmissions and has a component video input and an HDMI port to receive HDTV signal.

  • Opt for screen sizes that will suit your living room. For example, a 42 incher will require you to sit at least 10 feet away, while a 32 incher will require a 6 feet gap.

  • Make sure that the contrast ratio is high. Higher the contrast ratio, the better. Some LED TVs are known to quote contrast ratios as high as 2000000:1.

  • Brightness, usually expressed in Cd/m² should be at least 400 Cd/m² for a pleasurable viewing experience.

  • Response time makes a lot of difference in the picture quality. Expressed in milliseconds, lesser the response time, the better. LCD TVs of the previous times listed response times of 12 to 16 milliseconds, while the latest models are offering response times of even 4 milliseconds.

  • Connectivity forms a key factor in determining how efficient an LCD TV is. High Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) ports enable HD digital devices such as Blu-Ray players and game consoles to be connected to your TV. So, narrow down on models that offer at least three HDMI ports. If you intend to use the TV screen as a PC monitor, then sets that come with PC inputs will be ideal.

  • Several LCD TVs of today are offering “Freeview”. A Freeview TV lets you enjoy free digital TV and radio and is ready for the Digital Switchover. So, LCD TVs with integrated Freeview offer best value for money.
